Before the ceremony starts you will often see the Shaman playing a tune with a harmonica or chanting Icaros to the medicine.
The Icaros are “Callings of the spirit” and in essence, they are mantras that the Shaman has discovered deep into his own studies of sound and healing.
In India, I believe they call it Nada Yoga (The yoga of sound)
In essence, it is a science where if you pay close attention, everything in life is made out of sound.
Vibration and frequency are the subtlest forms of physicality.
There are sounds that inspire peace, calmness and love within you.
And some other that make you cringe (nails on a chalkboard). π΅
It is well known that some plants grow faster and cows lactate larger amounts when exposed to classical music and other specific sounds.
Therefore, the “Conjuro” or “Incantations” are done before the medicine is shared.
The intention for this is to cleanse the space and the energy around the medicine as well as set an intention and a tone to the ceremony.
Sometimes, the Shaman will bless/chant over a participant’s cup before handing it to him/her.
These are called “copas cantadas” which means “chanted cups” and they are often stronger, take you deeper or bring you into a specific healing process that the Shaman noticed you need in that night.
There’s a lot of science and deep understanding of the building blocks of reality that go hand in hand with drinking Ayahuasca in a proper ceremonial setting.
